Two people and a mountain at sunset

a mountain ridge, a valley

They wrote to me in the spring with one request: no guests, no schedule, a mountain. We agreed on an evening in autumn, when the light is low and the ridge is empty.

High ground is hard to photograph because everything is far away. The job is to find the one thing that is close, a hand, a veil, a step, and wait for it.

Bride and groom kissing in warm backlight with hills behind themBride and groom dancing on a grassy hillside at sunsetGroom spinning the bride in a white gown on a hillside

We drove most of the way up and walked the last twenty minutes. The ceremony took five minutes, after which they asked for a dance, so we gave them the next hour.

Bride in a tulle gown standing in grass while the groom in a dark suit looks toward a hillGroom seen from behind with the bride's hand on his neck against a dark hillBride and groom embracing on a bare hillside under a pale sky with a small moonGroom in a white shirt holding his jacket over his shoulder, facing hills, with the bride a few steps away

Dancing in the grass

There was no music and a lot of wind. She lifted her skirt, he turned her under his arm, and I changed almost nothing between frames except where I stood.

Bride and groom standing a little apart in front of layered hills in hazeLayered mountain valley in warm haze with no peopleSilhouettes of a couple kissing against a dark sky with a red glow on the horizon

After the light

When the sun went behind the hill we stopped chasing it and looked for what was left: the valley in haze, the two of them as shapes.

We were back at the car with the heater on before it was fully dark. The drive down was quiet, and the photographs were still warm.
